Value for money activities

Looking for value for money days out in Cornwall? Here are some tips for choosing attractions that are a safe bet for giving you a great experience…

1. Talk to accommodation providers

If you’re visiting Cornwall, then it’s always worth asking the staff where you’re staying if they’d recommend anything! Front-line employees at hotels and campsites often get invited to try activities so they can spread the word, so you’ll be speaking with people who’ve got first-hand experience. Sometimes they even provide discount codes to their recommended attractions!

2. Look out for awards

The Cornwall Tourism Awards showcase some of Cornwall’s best experiences. To be in for a chance of winning, attractions have to submit evidence for high customer satisfaction and are often visited by mystery shoppers from the board of judges. So, you can be sure that those making it through to the winners and finalists are sound! We’re delighted to have won awards for the New Tourism Business category twice in a row since opening in 2020.

3. Look for third party endorsement

Independent guides and directories such as Proper Cornwall are great for finding trusted attractions and other fantastic things to do in Cornwall. We’ve received their endorsement and it’s worth looking out for their logo to see who else they recommend!

4. Check review sites

Check Trip Advisor and other review sites such as Google and Facebook. As well as looking at ratings, you can see if attractions have won any awards. We won Trip Advisors Traveller’s Choice Award, 2022 and are so grateful to all our customers for taking the time to review us.

Days out on a budget – money saving tips

If you’re looking for budget friendly things to do in Cornwall and ways to save money on days out, then here are some further tips:

1. Come for free first

Not sure if an activity is for you? There might be the chance to visit an attraction for free and observe from a distance before you decide to pay for an experience. Here at Via Ferrata Cornwall you can park for free and enjoy our free nature trails and wild play areas for under 10’s. There are also various viewing areas where you can check out the activities. Near the Café there’s a viewing platform which overlooks the high wire bridge of our Via Ferrata course and you can also see where the rock climbing happens. The nature trails also take you near to the Via Ferrata’s zip wire, so you can check that out. The Café, run by The Cornish Barista, does incredibly good food and drink, or you could take a picnic to enjoy in the nature trails.

2. try things out bit by bit

Wondering how much you or your kids will take to something? Maybe you want to try a new activity, but aren’t sure how much everyone will enjoy it? Consider trying a less expensive taster session before taking the plunge with a longer experience that costs more.

One of the reasons our family friendly coasteering sessions are so popular is that they take place within the sheltered (and very beautiful!) confines of our quarry. No tides, no wind, just calm water and many different heights to leap from in a relaxed environment. This is great for someone who’s a bit unsure or trying the sport for the first time, and if they want to give it a go in the sea next time then Lizard Adventure is a brilliant option!

Another popular activity is our mixed watersports. This is great for trying out different activities (SUP, kayaking and canoeing) in our quarry. You can easily switch between the three and see which ones you take to. If you’re new to watersports, this can be ideal before committing to just one kind of boat on a longer trip. If you prefer to stick with one kind of watersport then we vouch for Lizard Adventure’s sea kayaking sessions!

Finally, our Via Ferrata activity is a super fun high wire adventure involving scaling cliff faces, tackling high wire bridges and zip-lining. If you’re up for giving it a go but not sure if you want to do the whole course, you can try the Adventure Zone and then upgrade to the Full Classic route on the day. It’s very exciting, so the vast majority of people do upgrade!

3. Find cheaper fuel and parking

Why not check out some comparison websites to find cheaper parking, like JustPark or Parkopedia. There’s also the Petrol Prices app which will help you find the best prices on fuel.

4. Check social media for discounts

You can try searching for discounts and following the attractions you’re interested in on social media. Some will run social media competitions or provide updates on any discounts they’re running. There are also discounts in Seymac’s For One and All Guide, which includes various voucher options for different attractions, so look out for it in the leaflet racks throughout Cornwall!

Value for money with us

“Would definitely recommend via ferrata – staff were very friendly and re-assuring; Jake our instructor was very helpful. The experience was really fun and value for money. Good to know that the profits are to support a good cause :)” – Chloe, Trip Advisor

Here are some of the things we’ve been doing to make our activities great value for money…

1. More than just an adrenaline rush

Our activities are designed to give you more than just an adrenaline rush. The Via Ferrata is one of the most unique, fun and exhilarating adventures to be had! Journeying through our quarries on an unforgettable adventure by winding across cliff faces, wobbling across high wires and zip-lining, you get the chance to push your limits, conquer fears, build confidence and feel an incredible sense of achievement – whilst having lots of fun!

Our coasteering sessions are also fantastic for confidence building, and as with all our activities, you can make it as challenging as you like. You choose the height you jump from, and you’ll learn technique and skills along the way.

“All very professional and real value for money with real challenges and adventure. Instructor AK was excellent.”- Roy, Trip Advisor

2. Comprehensive Instructor training

Our friendly Instructors are all fully qualified and your safety is our top priority. They’ve also received training in coaching and development, so they’re supportive, encouraging and professional. This is reflected in our reviews – you’re in safe and capable hands!

3. Go at your own pace

It’s a relaxed environment here, where you can take your time and push yourself as much as you want. We control group numbers on the activities, so we don’t let our quarries get overly busy and you’ll never be rushed along.

4. Something for everyone

We can keep your whole family engaged. If you’ve got a group with mixed ages and abilities on our activities then no problem! There are also other options if not everyone wants to try an activity. There’s a Café, some viewing platforms where you can watch your group on the Via Ferrata, nature trails and a wild play area for under 10’s, so if you’re coming with little ones you enjoy our site whilst the others are doing the more daring things!

It really is suitable for all ages and we felt completely safe.” – Catherine, Trip Advisor

5. Free parking, nature trails & wild play area

We’re turning our site into a place where you come for a full day out, with plenty to keep you occupied. With fuel costs rising, we’re glad to be able to offer the chance to park up for free and spend the day here.

You could spend a couple of hours enjoying one of our activities, and then treat yourself to some treats in The Cornish Barista’s Café or take a picnic to enjoy on our nature trails. The entrance for the trails is at our carpark and the routes wind through diverse habitats, with plenty of wildlife to see, both in real life and on our interpretation boards. Our circular trail lasts about an hour and includes a 360 degree viewing point where you can enjoy views over the Falmouth Bay and the Lizard Peninsular. Another highlight is our Bluebell Woods, which look stunning in the flowering season. For a longer walk, you can continue on to the bottom of the valley and join the public footpath to Argal Reservoir.

If you have under 10’s, you could also spend some time exploring our muddy kitchen and wild play area, which has a climbing slope, swings, a slide and a covered seating area for parents to sit.

Watch this space as we also plan to develop some free heritage trails in the future!

6. Multiple zip wire rides

Depending on the nature of your group and the session, there may be the opportunity for you to enjoy multiple zip wire rides as part of the Via Ferrata Full Classic activity. This will only be an option if times allows for it so we can’t make any promises, but getting the chance to soar through the air over our gorgeous quarry more than once definitely adds to the fun!

7. The Cornish Barista’s Café

All of the food is great quality and good value for money – Craig, Trip Advisor

The Cornish Barista’s Quarryside Café is just a few footsteps from the carpark and overlooks our beautiful quarry.

The team is super friendly and the food is fantastic, with delicious breakfasts and lunches and an impressive cake selection! It’s made with fresh, locally-sourced ingredients and there’s no better place to relax and enjoy stunning views. There’s wonderful outdoor seating and in the winter you can cosy up inside with a nice big log burner!

8. Profits to charity

“Absolutely fantastic day out!…We love that the proceeds from visitors help to get disadvantaged young people out and about, and they even have an accessible abseil so that even people in wheelchairs can give it a go. Definitely feels like great value for money, especially when you know what they’re doing with the money!! Highly recommend a visit” – Lucy, Trip Advisor

All the profits from Via Ferrata Cornwall and 10% of sales from The Cornish Barista’s Café go to our launching charity BF Adventure. Sharing the same site as us, BF Adventure supports hundreds of Cornwall’s most vulnerable children and young people to build life skills, develop confidence, overcome barriers and have fun. Trauma, poverty, social isolation, learning/physical disabilities, behavioural challenges and mental ill health are some of the challenges these children face.

BF Adventure uses trauma informed youth work combined with our 60 acres of heathland, woodland and flooded quarries to help them to identify their strengths, build positive relationships, develop resilience and discover new passions! Activities like coasteering, watersports, archery and rock climbing are fantastic for building self-esteem. There are also accessible adventures, with a purpose-built wheelchair abseil ramp and an all-terrain wheelchair. You can see our blog post on where your money goes to learn more!

“You make my day every time I come here. You are my heroes for courage, self-esteem & confidence.” – Young Person
